WHY THIS EXISTS
A neighbour-run way to help non-emergency reports reach the police.
I’m Ashley, a Dartmouth neighbour. I’m frustrated with what’s happening in our community: open drug use, discarded needles, and waking up to camera footage of people checking my car doors and creeping around my property.
We’re told to report everything. But the online form only takes a few types of incidents, and calling the 24/7 non-emergency line (902-490-5020) or the daytime reporting line (902-490-5016) doesn’t always fit into a day, depending on how long the hold is.
At a neighbourhood safety meeting, when I explained this reporting gap, a crime analyst agreed to accept my reports by email instead. So I built this form for myself and for neighbours who want their reports included in the police data but skip the call because it doesn’t feel urgent enough, or the day gets away from them.
Let's make the small stuff matter. The police want incident data. All of it.
This form helps our neighbourhoods and the police account for what isn’t getting reported to them. Think about all the social media posts alerting neighbours to lock their cars because someone was caught checking doors. Log that here instead.
What this is
Neighbourhood Record is a neighbour-run volunteer project. Data is self-reported in the form and shared with the police weekly.
What this isn’t
Neighbourhood Record isn’t part of the police or Halifax Regional Municipality, or any other entity. It never replaces calling 911 for emergencies.
What happens to your information
I email your report, name, email address, and phone number to the police. The police may contact you to open a police report and collect your footage. I never see your footage. Seven days after I send your report to the police, I delete your contact information, report details, and exact street number from this site. I keep only statistics about the number and type of reports, street name, city, incident date, and incident time. If you ask for updates about this initiative, I keep your email in a separate list. I never sell your information.
Questions or ideas?
I’m the only person who runs it. If you have questions or want to get involved, email me at ashley@neighbourhoodrecord.ca.
